Masato Dogauchi, Professor of Law, Waseda University, Law School

Historically, the sports community in Japan has been governed by senior ex-athletes relatively unaware of legal disciplines and somewhat averse to lawyers. However, good governance based in law removes unnecessary or extended disputes as distractions that can derail sports activities and enables athletes to devote themselves to their games. Thus, dispute resolution by outside lawyers has been established as the first step to introduce such good governance into the Japanese sports community.
In this talk, Professor Dogauchi, the chief executive officer of the Japan Sports Arbitration Agency, will explain sports arbitration and mediation as well as sports law in Japan generally, drawing upon more than seven years of experience in the field.
