After three months of mass protests, Hong Kong is in a state of crisis. Demonstrations against a controversial proposal to allow extradition to Mainland China have escalated into a much broader public protest against Beijing’s increased interference in the “high degree of autonomy” that was promised when Hong Kong transitioned from a British Colony to a Special Administrative Region of China. Academics who have lived and worked in Hong Kong will analyze the underlying causes of the unrest and the implications for “One Country, Two Systems” as a form of regional autonomy.
