On April 16, the Institute of Asian-Pacific Business Law (IAPBL) hosted a talk by Dr. Jiaying Jiang, “Accelerating the Fintech Revolution: Blockchain, Cryptocurrency, and Central Bank Digital Currency.” There were 28 attendees from Richardson, Hawaii’s legal community and state government, and other law schools. Dr. Jiang discussed the definitions and general technology behind blockchains. She provided use cases for digital currencies by central banks, private banks, and law enforcement. The talk evaluated the regulatory landscape of the current cryptocurrency industry, the future of cryptocurrency regulation, and central bank digital currencies (CBDC’s) in the US, EU, and China. The talk was moderated by first-year Richardson student Chloe Berridge ’24.

Professor Charles Booth gave a presentation, “Corporate Insolvency in China and Asia: Developing Effective Insolvency Infrastructures,” to the UH Mānoa ASAN 600C–Chinese Studies Course: Scopes and Methods, on October 2 via Zoom. Charles was recently reappointed as a co-director of the Professional Diploma in Insolvency Course offered by the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA), and recognized by the Hong Kong Official Receiver’s Office. The course, which Charles co-designed over 20 years ago, is currently enrolling its 13th cohort of students.
