As the People’s Republic of China celebrated its 70th anniversary on October 1, 2019, anti-government protesters in Hong Kong were blocking roads, setting fires and throwing petrol bombs. Police have arrested hundreds of protestors, one as young as 12, and have been accused of using excessive force. After three months of mass protests, Hong Kong is in a state of crisis. Demonstrations against a controversial proposal to allow extradition to Mainland China have escalated into a much broader public protest against Beijing’s increased interference in the “high degree of autonomy” that was promised when Hong Kong transitioned from a British Colony to a Special Administrative Region of China. Academics who have lived and worked in Hong Kong will analyze the underlying causes of the unrest and the implications for “One Country, Two Systems” as a form of regional autonomy.
